Canada’s rap scene has undoubtedly gained some serious momentum in the past few years. Beyond the rappers that have cemented their name in the past decade, we’ve witnessed a surge of incredible artists from the 6ix who are bringing their stories to the forefront. Among those names is Portion, the Scarborough rapper who turned his pain into honeyed melodies. Although it’s been nearly a year since he released music last, he’s finally breaking the hiatus with new music.
In the face of adversity, Portion still comes out on top. The rapper came through with his first music since 2022’s “Letter From Miami” and he’s rapping with a purpose. On “Downfall,” the rapper brings his harmonious flows over a soulful, atmospheric production handled by Gabe Lucas, KutOff, and T Five. Portion sounds off on his doubters and the leeches as he reflects on his rise to fame and details the importance of loyalty and persevering in the face of adversity.
Portion’s Big Return
In a statement, Portion detailed the inspiration behind his latest single. “As I work on new music, I’ve been able to tap into different emotions. There were certain people within my own circle praying on my downfall and those are the things they don’t tell you before you get into this industry. If you’re working on something and are a creative of any kind, you can relate to this song and feeling,” he said.
Last year, Portion delivered his debut project, I Am Nothing Without, along with the deluxe edition titled, Trench Baby. The project boasted a feature from Toosii who appeared on the stand-out track, “EASTSIDE,” along with the single, “Wave,” which earned massive praise. Hopefully, with the release of “Downfall,” it won’t be too long until he slides through with the follow-up. Quotable Lyrics
I been wrapped up in this life, I got a flight at 8 a.m.
I got used to all this fake shit, I got used cuttin’ friends
Got b*tches in my call log, we won’t ever speak again
How you pray on me to lose? I thought you wanted me to win
